MISSION STATEMENT

The UMHB Conservatory of Music is a program of the College of Visual and Performing Arts of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Our mission is to provide quality music instruction for the young people of the Central Texas community and a teaching laboratory for the Music Education students of the UMHB Music Department.

HISTORY

The UMHB Conservatory of Music has been a valued component of the Department of Music and a leading fine arts resource for the youth of Central Texas since its creation forty years ago. It was founded in 1966 as the Preparatory Division of the Department of Music by its Director, Sharon Spurlock. In 1978 Celinda Hallbauer Messer became Director, having been assistant director since 1975. More recently, in 1996, the pre-college music enterprise was renamed and reorganized as the UMHB Conservatory of Music and acquired Deborah Jones as its Director. In July 2004, Jonathan Gary moved from Assistant Director of the Conservatory to his current position as Conservatory Director.
